Class of 2006 Students Win National Board Competition
Two
University of Missouri College of Veterinary students placed
highly in the national American Board of Veterinary Practitioners
National Student Case Report Contest.
Rebekah Beam (right), class of 2006, was awarded first place
for her case report
titled: "Advanced imaging for diagnosis and treatment planning
for a case of intermittent open-mouth jaw locking in a Persian
cat."
Her faculty mentor was Dr. James (Jimi) Cook, associate professor
of veterinary medicine and surgery. Her co-authors were Dr.
David Kunz, resident veterinarian; Dr. Cristi Cook, clinical
assistant professor; and Philip Briscoe, class of 2004.
Kara Forsee (left), also class of 2006, received honorable mention.
Her manuscript addressed Treatment of septic peritonitis by
open peritoneal drainage.
The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) promotes
standards in the art and science of contemporary veterinary
clinical practice. ABVP diplomates are veterinarians who have
demonstrated expertise in a broad range of clinical subjects
relevant to their practice and display the ability to communicate
medical observations and data in an organized and appropriate
manner.
Unlike other AVMA specialty boards, which are devoted to specific
disciplines or organ systems, ABVP awards species-specific certification
in avian practice, beef cattle practice, canine and feline practice,
dairy practice, equine practice, feline practice, food animal
practice, and swine health management.
Each year ABVP opens its contest to students in all areas of
veterinary medicine and surgery, who as first time authors,
produce manuscripts which meet the criteria required for board
certification.
Each winning student's case report must include complete and
appropriate diagnostic workups as well as medical and/or surgical
managements; is clearly reflective of their veterinary expertise;
demonstrates their ability to apply medical principles in diagnosis
and treatment; and, displays their ability to communicate medical
observations and data in an organized manner.
Submissions are reviewed using the same guidelines as those
used to evaluate ABVP applicants.
