This two-part lecture series will use case material derived from the University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center BREATHE Clinic (Bringing REspiration and Aerodigestion Toward HEalth), which launched in October of 2022. An emphasis will be placed on specific questions relevant for respiratory diseases and aerodigestive disorders, development of comprehensive differential lists and the diagnostics to determine the underlying disorder(s), and overall treatment strategies.
Immune Thrombocytopenia: A New Take on an Old Disease

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an aggressive hemostatic disorder of dogs with significant morbidity and mortality. Antiplatelet antibodies are traditionally thought to target platelets for clearance by splenic macrophages; however, recent work in mice and humans has revealed additional mechanisms of thrombocytopenia. By the end of the lecture, attendees should have a more thorough understanding of the pathophysiology of ITP that may help guide future treatments and allow clinicians to better prognosticate.
Diabetes Mellitus: A Whole Lotta Change!

Diabetes mellitus is a common endocrinopathy in dogs and cats. For decades, little had changed in our understanding or treatment of the disease. In the past several years, dramatic changes have occurred. We have new options in insulin choice, insulin administration, monitoring of therapy, and as of winter 2023, new options in oral hypoglycemic therapy for the treatment of many diabetic cats. This talk will focus on what is new regarding our ability to care for diabetic dogs and cats.
Current Trends in Pain Management: What are the Options and Where is the Evidence?

This lecture will focus on current evidence regarding the effectiveness of common analgesics including NSAIDs, opioids, gabapentin, amantadine and acetaminophen, and newer products such as anti-nerve growth factor monoclonal antibody. By the end of the lecture, attendees should have a comprehensive understanding of the available analgesic options, their efficacy, safety considerations, and the potential of emerging therapies for effective pain management in dogs and cats.
Being the Leader of the Pack – A Case-Based Approach to Improving Leadership

Veterinarians must be leaders due to our position within the medical team. However, some veterinarians may not feel like natural leaders and often have little training or background in this critical clinical skill. This discussion will use real life experiences that will highlight daily opportunities and mindsets that will help enhance your leadership success within your team.
Diagnosis and Management of Invasive Fungal Infections in Dogs and Cats

Fungal infections are a common cause of morbidity and mortality in our veterinary patients. Recent advances in diagnostics and therapeutics have improved our ability to diagnose, monitor, and appropriately treat these infections in dogs and cats. This talk will focus on management of invasive fungal infections and will utilize cases to emphasize concepts.
