Pathobiology and Integrative Biomedical Sciences

The Department of Pathobiology and Integrative Biomedical Sciences (PIBS) advances animal and human health through excellence in discovery, education, service and leadership. Our department brings together strengths in microbiology, physiology, neuroscience, pathology and other core biomedical sciences — uniting foundational research and clinical relevance under one collaborative academic home.

PIBS faculty provide instruction across all four years of the DVM curriculum and lead graduate and undergraduate education in disciplines such as immunology, infectious disease, neuroscience and comparative medicine. The department offers a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, graduate training at the master’s and doctoral levels, and residency programs accredited by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine, the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists, and the American Board of Toxicology.

Our research portfolio includes federally and industry funded programs in microbial pathogenesis, neurophysiology, reproductive biology, molecular genetics, cardiovascular science, toxicology, parasitology and more. We are proud to support advanced research infrastructure such as the Laboratory for Infectious Disease Research and nationally recognized animal model resource centers. Through these programs, PIBS contributes to innovations in diagnostics, treatments and disease prevention that benefit both veterinary and human medicine.

PIBS faculty also provide expert diagnostic services through the Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory and serve as leaders in scientific and professional societies at the state, national and international levels.
