Getting into veterinary school isn’t easy. Competition is high, expectations are rigorous and the process can feel overwhelming without a clear plan.

The good news: you don’t have to figure it out alone.

At the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, our experts review more than 2,000 applications each year and know exactly what sets strong applicants apart. Here are 10 tips to help you stand out.

1. Build a strong academic foundation

Your academic record is one of the first things admissions committees review. GPA, course rigor and consistency all signal how prepared you are for a demanding curriculum. Competitive applicants often have GPAs around 3.75, backed by strong performance in science courses.

2. Get a range of veterinary experiences

Hands-on experience is essential.  Exposure to different areas — small animal, large animal, exotics or research — shows both commitment and a broader understanding of the profession.

3. Show up in your community

Veterinary medicine is rooted in service. Volunteer work, community involvement and leadership roles demonstrate initiative and a genuine commitment to helping others.

4. Know each program’s requirements

Every program is different. Understanding prerequisite coursework and expectations early helps you plan ahead and avoid surprises. Here are Mizzou’s requirements.

5. Follow application instructions exactly

Details matter. The Veterinary Medical College Application Service (VMCAS) is how programs evaluate you. Incomplete or inaccurate information can hurt your application.

6. Stay ahead of deadlines

Deadlines are firm. Plan to gather transcripts, request recommendations and complete materials well before the deadlines. Strong applications don’t come together at the last minute.

7. Start planning finances early

Veterinary school is a significant investment. Understanding costs, budgeting and credit early will help you make informed decisions and avoid surprises later.

8. Understand loans and scholarships

Not all financial aid is the same. Pay attention to interest rates, repayment terms and eligibility requirements so you understand the long-term impact.

9. Stay proactive with financial aid

Submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is just the start. Continue reviewing your aid package and exploring options so you can adjust your plan as needed.

10. Be ready to show who you are

Once you’ve made it to the interview stage, everyone looks good on paper. What sets you apart is how you communicate, reflect on your experiences and connect with others. Be yourself and be ready to talk about why veterinary medicine matters to you.

Ready to take the next step?

Choosing the right program is an important next step. At the Mizzou College of Veterinary Medicine, that preparation continues through hands-on learning, collaborative training and real-world clinical experience — preparing students to be day-one ready.
