Food Animal Production/Population Medicine Residency

The University of Missouri (MU), Columbia is offering a 3 year residency in food animal production/population medicine. Twenty-four of the 36 month residency will consist of clinical activities primarily focused in the areas of field service and production medicine. The remaining 12 months will be devoted to scholarly activities and vacations will be drawn from these 12 months. This residency emphasizes broad-based food animal practice skills including herd health concepts, competence in quantitative concepts related to population medicine, data analysis, and scholarly productivity. The residents will share in after-hours emergency duty equally with the other food animal house officers. Resident performance will be reviewed semi-annually and reappointment will be contingent on satisfactory progress.

Approximately 500,000 cattle reside within a 50 mile radius of Columbia, Missouri. The residency is supported by 6 clinical faculty, 2 public health faculty, and 2 extension faculty including 3 ACVIM large animal internal medicine diplomates, 2 ACVPM (preventive medicine) diplomates, 1 ABVP diplomate, and 2 ACT diplomates. This residency requires enrolment in a graduate degree program leading to an MPH, MS or PhD degree. MPH and MS degrees likely will be completed during the course of the 3 year residency, but completion of a PhD degree likely will require an additional 1-2 years of coursework and research. The graduate degree requirement may be waived for a candidate who has completed an MS or PhD in a related field. Active faculty research supporting graduate studies includes bovine mastitis, animal welfare, respiratory disease, neonatal immunology, food safety, and infectious disease epidemiology.
