MU Ophthalmology Specialty Internship

OPHTHALMOLOGY SPECIALTY INTERNSHIP:

The University of Missouri, College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery’s Ophthalmology service invites applications from highly motivated, hard-working veterinarians for a one-year clinical ophthalmology specialty internship position. The goal of this 12-month specialty internship program is to better prepare the individual to be highly qualified and competitive for advancement into an ophthalmology residency. The individual will spend the year with our clinical ophthalmology service to assist with the admittance, diagnostic evaluation, treatment, and overall management of our ophthalmology cases and other duties as assigned. Oversight will be provided by boarded faculty, residents, and technicians. There will be some after- hours and weekend duties depending on the case load and discretion of the attending faculty. In addition to primary experience with our ophthalmology section, some shifts will be required within the Emergency Medical group (approximately 2-4 shifts per month). These shifts may be out of normal business hours. During this coverage, the individual will be excused from primary ophthalmology service responsibilities. In order to minimize response time for hospitalized patients when not working emergency shifts, the intern is expected to obtain housing within a 20-minute radius of the Veterinary Health Center.

Intern participation at weekly journal clubs, seminars, and resident rounds is expected. The intern may become involved in research projects as long as the research does not interfere with clinical duties. The intern is strongly encouraged to prepare and submit a case report, retrospective study, or review article to a refereed journal for publication during the internship year.

Further information may be obtained by calling Dr. Elizabeth Giuliano, Professor of Ophthalmology and Section Chief at (573) 882-7821 or giulianoe@missouri.edu
